Living with Migraine

Types of Treatments

While there is no universal way to relieve migraine pain, there are several remedies for symptomatic relief.1 It's important to note that the effectiveness of remedies vary from individual to individual.2

Migraine treatment options can be divided into two categories:

1. Preventive treatment:

According to research, approximately 38% of migraine patients would benefit from preventive medicine. However, less than 13% take such treatment.1

Preventive medications are taken to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.1 They are recommended for people who experience frequent, severe, or long-lasting migraines that significantly affect their quality of life.1,2

Preventive medications include CGRP monoclonal antibodies, beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants.1

CGRP monoclonal antibodies are a newer class of medication that target a specific CGRP receptor involved in pathophysiology of migraine attacks.4
Beta-blockers
Beta-blockers and anticonvulsants work by stabilising the excitability of brain cells.5
Antidepressants
Antidepressants help to affect the levels of certain neurotransmitters involved in a migraine attack.5
2. Episodic treatment:

They include CGRP inhibitors, NSAIDs and Triptans.2,3
